12 affordable Easter brunches
Brunch has become as much of an Easter tradition as an egg hunt. But, for many, an elaborate resort-style brunch and their $50 plus per person price tags are too costly. Here are some more affordable options for those who want to celebrate with family and friends.

3 Tomatoes & a Mozzarella, 3 stars
The chewy, crunchy crust might make you forget the upper-crust prices.

4th Floor Grille & Sports Bar
A Scottsdale secret haunt for retro favorites like really good but bargain-priced prime rib with all the fixin's, and a boisterous sports bar.

5395 West Soul Food Place, 4 stars
With few soul food options outside of Central Phoenix, 5395 West Soul Food Place Restaurant is an unexpected find in the middle of Avondale.

5th Avenue Cafe
Eating at 5th Avenue Café is like riding a roller coaster. Some dishes hit high points of flavor and freshness while others take away the thrill of the ride.

98 South Wine Bar & Kitchen
In all the years I have lived in Arizona, I have never been to the historic San Marcos Square in Chandler. This is a discovery that took far too long.

A Touch of European Cafe
A Touch of European Café is Polish food done well. The tiny place is in an adorable building on a tree-lined street in Glendale's historic district.

A&J Chicago Style Bar BQ
The valley has a diverse assortment of barbecue joints, some of them fixtures, like A & J "Chicago Style" Bar BQ. Entering its 17th year, A & J obviously has serious, longtime fans.

Acacia Café
Five-month old Acacia Café perks up a strip of Indian School Road with a cheery interior, exceptionally friendly counter service and fresh and mostly made-from-scratch fare that's more than reasonably priced.

Acapulco Bay Company
Just a few adjustments would make this place on the top of my south-of-the-border seafood list.

Adobe Restaurant
More than an above-average golf course coffee shop, it's a Biltmore landmark. Try the substantial and delicious seafood basket at lunch, or an inventive stuffed Portobello for breakfast.

Agua frescas and aguas de frutas
These simple, refreshing "fresh water" or "fruit waters" are made with in-season fruit, water and sugar.

Ah-So Steak & Sushi House of Japan
The teppanyaki room at Ah-So Steak & Sushi House of Japan in Mesa is loud. And hot. And so much fun.

Aiello's Fine Italian Dining, 3.5 stars
Aiello's Fine Italian Dining is drawing diners from across the Valley with classic Italian staples.

Ajo Al's
An old-time Valley favorite for consistently satisfying Sonoran-Mexican. Portions are huge, prices are reasonable, and a few modern updates keep the menu out of a rut.

Al-Hana Restaurant
Just watching the chefs throw pita and flatbread "pies" into their brick oven was enough to get us drooling.

Alexi's Grill
Alexi's Grill is old school. It's a place where professional servers, clad in tuxedos, are swift and efficient and the bussers refill water glasses when the level dips half an inch.

Alice Cooper's Town
It's hard to say if Alice Cooper's Town is more a sports bar masquerading as a shrine to Alice Cooper or a shrine to Alice Cooper masquerading as a sports bar.

Aloha Kitchen
Aloha Kitchen in Mesa is an unassuming little spot with a strip mall location, bright lighting, run-down tables and chairs. But it hasn't stopped customers from coming in.

Aloha Kitchen, 4 stars
This cheery café turns out Hawaiian dishes that will have your mouth doing the hula.

Alto Ristorante e Bar, 4 stars
Straightforward, upscale Italian in a chic resort setting, with a centerpiece salumi room.

America's Taco Shop, 3.5 stars
The shop offers a simple menu built almost exclusively around excellent carne asada.

Amy's Baking Company
To get the most out of Amy's Baking Company, a charming French-Italian bistro in Scottsdale, head straight for the drool-worthy bake case.

Andreoli Italian Grocer, 4.5 stars
A restaurant that doubles as a marketplace, brimming with a nearly unimaginable bounty of authentic, regional Italian foods.

Anzio Landing
Got WWII buffs in your party, then take them to Anzio Landing at Falcon Field in Mesa.

Anzio's Italian Restaurant
Eating at north Phoenix's Italian restaurant, Anzio's, is like going to a friend's house for a casual dinner.

Ararat Mediterranean Retaurant

Arcadia Farms

Arcadia Farms
Arcadia Farms is a charming historic house in downtown Scottsdale serving up high quality tearoom favorites like sandwiches, salads and fresh baked desserts.

Archie's Deli
Archie's Deli is anything but an assembly-line sandwich shop. This authentic delicatessen serves traditional Jewish favorites such as noodle kugel and chicken soup with matzo ball or kreplach along with hearty sandwiches on fresh bread.

Arizona Joe's
Arizona Joe's might seem like a place for the average Joe, since most of the food is fried, the music is country-Western, and a giant chicken greets you at the entrance. But I soon discovered that the broasted chicken is anything but average.

Arizona Native Frybread

Armitage Wine Lounge and Café
Armitage provides an elegant setting to wrap up the workday with a drink before dinner.

Arrowhead Grill, 3.5 stars
This higher-end independent restaurant offers the best steaks west of Central Avenue.

Asia de Cuba

Asian Fusion
A friendly, casual lunch stop featuring Thai, Chinese and Japanese dishes served buffet style or a la carte.

Athenian Express
Lost in the sea of light-rail construction, our downtown Phoenix restaurants need love - lots of it. I mention downtown because of the visit to Athenian Express, just south of Roosevelt, where they are feeling the crunch of frustrated motorists and perplexed parkers.

Au Petit Four
If you can get past the display case of tempting pastries, you'll find delicious quick-casual French favorites like salmon quiche, baguette sandwiches, panini and a small selection of reheatable entrees such as Dover sole and chicken Cordon Bleu. Then, head right back to the pastries, which are baked fresh daily by the café's charming French proprietors.

Avanti, 3.5 stars
Avanti clings to the past with an old-fashioned experience driven by craftsmanship, not innovation.

AZ/88

Azteca Mexican Food
You may have taken home their pastries, sold at a number of area supermarkets. But buying those empanadas right from the source allows you a fresh sample of the bakery's authentic Mexican cuisine made with all natural ingredients.

Babbo Italian Eatery
A bright and friendly neighborhood Italian eatery with specialties like chicken chipotle pasta, massive Tuscan-style sandwiches and a large selection of thin crust pizzas.

Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen
Fat Tuesday can be every day if you head over to Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen.

Baci Italian Bistro
Driving by Baci you might not think that good Italian food is being served inside, but ignore the appearance of the building and go on in for all your Italian favorites from antipasto to pizza, chicken, beef, seafood, and lots of pasta. It's homemade taste in a homey atmosphere, with fine Italian dining at reasonable prices.

Backstreet Wine Salon

Bad Donkey
Toasted and cold subs, entrée salads, pizza, ice cream and beer make a satisfying combination in this casual, counter-service spot.

Bar NoRTH, 3.5 stars
The tony shopping/entertainment development of Kierland Commons has welcomed yet another Fox Restaurant Concepts business.

Basil
Excited with the thought of Mesa having a good, new Italian restaurant, especially after reading an ad that says "Experience Italy" (without the airfare), we had an evening meal that could be described as airline food on a plane to Italy.

Basilico Italian Restaurant
A fine place for neighborhood diners to fill up on competently crafted Italian standards like pizza, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken Florentine, shrimp scampi, veal Marsala, and eggplant parmigiano. The menu doesn't set it apart from the hundreds of other Italian joints in the Valley, but honest, from-scratch cooking, friendly service and low prices make a winning combination.

Basis New American Cuisine
New American cuisine is a phrase that always baffles me. What is new American cuisine and is it diametrically opposite of old American cuisine? What is old cuisine anyway? Wikipedia says new American cuisine is "upscale, contemporary cooking," and if that's true, Basis New American Cuisine is indeed, that.

Bel Sito Ristorante

Bella Vino Ristorante, 3.5 stars
While the Southeast Valley isn't lacking in Italian restaurants, there aren't too many that offer a romantic ambiance, halfway decent wine list and higher-end ingredients.
• More info >>

Benedetto Ristorante E Bar
Hidden away in a Scottsdale shopping complex, Benedetto aims to get picked up on the neighborhood Italian restaurant radar.

Benjarong Thai Restaurant
Benjarong will please everyone from Thai newcomers to even the choosiest of ethnic eaters, with creamy curries, searing-hot peppers and the freshest ingredients.

Bertha's Café
Bertha's Café is a blink-and-miss-it little eatery that is off the beaten path. Take a video tour.

Big Buns Bakery
I trekked out to lovely Carefree to check out Big Buns Bakery, a one-woman operation that opened in January. The selection isn't fancy. You won't find elaborate slices of layered cake or tiny cups of custard that look like works of art. Instead, look for hearty, old-fashioned breakfast goodies some of us grew up on: soft cinnamon rolls with a white glaze, sticky buns with a sugary pecan topping, cinnamon-laced coffee cake, oversized cookies, and several flavors of scones.

Big Earl's Greasy Eats
Big Earl's offers decent grub in surroundings that are so entertaining, so unabashedly kitschy, that it is impossible not to love it and want to go back.

Bill Johnson's Big Apple
Fifty years ago, Bill Johnson opened a restaurant that promoted a family atmosphere and a taste of the Old West on the outskirts of town. Phoenix has grown up around Bill Johnson's Big Apple, but customers are still flocking to East Van Buren for homemade barbecue and deep-dish apple pie.

Bill Johnson's Big Apple

Bistro 1940
Though situated in a sprawling south Chandler strip mall, it's one of those places that makes you forget the outside world once you're in.

Bistro Di Napoli

Bitz-ee Mama's
Downtown Glendale is home to many antique stores, unique shops and one of the best breakfasts in town: Bitz-ee Mama's.

Black Bear Diner
If you're hungry for a comforting breakfast, lunch or dinner or a humungous helping of the best pie ever, the Black Bear Diner is the place to go.

Black Forest Mill
With my German in-laws in town, I thought, what better place to take them to dinner than a German restaurant?

Black Mountain Coffee Shop, 3 stars
The menu offers basic coffee shop favorites, but generous prices make them extra tasty.

Bloom

Blu Burger Grille
Burgers take over half of the menu, as they should in a burger joint. I like the concept of building my own burger, and there are eight steps in doing so at the Blu.

blu sushi, 4 stars
Sushi rolls rule the day at this trendy spot with a sleek look and a menu heavy on sushi.

Blue Adobe Grille
The Blue Adobe Santa Fe Grille specializes in New Mexican cuisine, but also on the menu you will find pasta dishes, pizza, steaks and burgers. With so many choices, good quality food and service it's easy to understand why the Blue Adobe Grille draws a steady crowd for lunch and dinner every day of the week.

Blue Moon Saloon
Blue Moon Saloon is in a hard-to-find spot in the busy entertainment and shopping district near the Peoria Sports Complex. It has a loud, laid-back atmosphere, and the burgers and sliders are the best choices.

Blue Nile Cafe
The Blue Nile Café easily satisfies an ethnic craving.

Blue Sky Restaurant & Gallery, 3 stars
Good for a beautiful setting where you can relax, have some above-par snacks or comfort food and not be rushed.

Bola Thai
Writing about Bola Thai makes me want to go back. Thinking about Bola Thai makes me want to go back.

Bolero
Located at Seville Golf and Country Club, Bolero's offers a scenic atmosphere for a casual breakfast, Sunday brunch, weekday lunch, or elegant dinner.

Bollywood Brasserie
Bollywood Brasserie in north Scottsdale isn't your typical Indian restaurant.

Bombay Spice, 4 stars
With two locations in Phoenix, Bombay Spice puts a modern, healthful twist on Indian cuisine.

Bomberos Café and Wine Bar
Bomberos means ''firemen'' in Spanish, and this groovy wine bar café sends out heat with a light menu of meats, cheeses and panini, plus a solid list of wines and beers exclusively from South America.

Bonefish Grill
The ambience is pretty at Bonefish Grill in Mesa, with the back wall of the dining room anchored by a stunning fish-themed metal wall sculpture. Service is professional, and the dinner salad is pretty good. Unfortunately, that's where the compliments end.

Bourbon Steak opens at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess next week

Bourbon Steak, 4.5 stars
It's no stretch to suggest that these steaks may be the best you will ever eat.

Bravi Tuscan Kitchen
Bravi Tuscan Kitchen is a fast-casual restaurant in the Arrowhead area that offers fresh Italian dishes that don't take too long or cost too much.

Brittlebush Bar & Grill

Brunch Bunch: Bada BOOM! Pasta Room

Brunch Bunch: Cafe ZuZu

Brunchies
Brunchies has American and Mexican lunch and breakfast menus, which feature traditional and Mexican breakfasts, sandwiches, burros, tacos and salads.

Brunello Restaurant
Located at Dobson & Baseline in Mesa with outside seating overlooking the lake and a small, comfortable indoor dining area, it's a perfect place to catch a wonderful Arizona sunset or to take that special someone out for a romantic dinner. The service is five star, the food is first-class, and the ambience pleasing to the senses.

Buffalo Chip Saloon
The Buffalo Chip Saloon has stayed true to its roots - an old-time watering hole with real Western charm.

Building a dream
By noon on opening day of Sam Fox's newest restaurant, the dining room was so crowded that servers began seating lunch guests at the bar.

Buono's

Burger fans still savor medium rare
If the ever-expanding ground beef recall has you jittery, and at the same time craving a medium rare burger, there are still spots in the Valley where you can get a technically undercooked patty.

Burrito Bandito
Though it's a pretty small eatery, it does make an effort to sell you on a house favorite, the baby bandito - a smaller, fried version of the flour-shelled burrito.

Butcher Block Restaurant & Lounge
A steakhouse with old-school American dishes like shrimp cocktail, omelets, baked seafood fettuccine Alfredo rarebit, and shrimp scampi.

Cadillac Ranch, 3 stars
Cadillac Ranch at Tempe Marketplace is a cool hangout for the Western hipster.

Café Bink
What do you do for an encore when you run perhaps the Valley’s most sophisticated fine-dining restaurant? If you are Kevin Binkley (Binkley’s), you open a more casual place, with a more casual vibe, more accessible fare and lower prices. And you call it Café Bink.

Café Bink, 3.5 stars
Fine-dining chef Kevin Binkley gets more casual and accessible with Café Bink.

Café Bistro

Cafe Carumba!
I will head back to Cafe Carumba for their tasty, well-priced breakfasts and lunches, but they need to work on the dinner menu and staff.

Café Corral

Café Forté

Café Lalibela
The Valley is home to at least three Ethiopian restaurants, including Tempe's Café Lalibela. While some might consider Ethiopian cuisine exotic, vegetarians and college students have been gobbling the highly flavorful stews of Ethiopia for years. Many of the dishes are vegetarian, and the food is modestly priced.

Café Michelle
In downtown Mesa this is a good place to grab a quick, inexpensive breakfast or lunch. Café Michelle is located on the first floor of the Mesa City Plaza building with plenty of parking around the back of the high rise. For breakfast they offer eggs, bagels, omelets, burritos and pancakes and for lunch they have soups, sandwiches, salads, and rice bowls. Don't pass up the cookies.

Café on the Avenue, 3 stars
A contemporary bistro inside the West Valley Art Museum with a small, artfully presented selection of salads, quiche, crab cakes and desserts.

Café Paris French Bistro & Catering, 2.5 stars
This unassuming little French-inspired restaurant doesn't muster much enthusiasm.

Café Posada
Café Posada has been located on Ray Road, just east of Gilbert Road for many years, and if you've passed by it many times but never been inside, it's worthwhile for the distinctive house specialties and bold tastes. The food is more New Mexico style than Mexican, but unique and flavorful.

Café Rumba

Café Wasabi
Cafe Wasabi offers a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

CaféPino, 4 stars
Look past the quick-service shopping mall setting, and discover artisan Italian cuisine.

Caffe Boa
I often overlook Caffe Boa in Ahwatukee when thinking about a nice place for dinner in my neighborhood, but a recent visit reminded me how good it is. The restaurant is chic and cosmopolitan inside with a patio shrouded in greenery outside, making it a cute place for a date. The menu is Italian-inspired, but nightly specials add another dimension beyond pasta.

Calabria Italian Grocery & Deli, 3.5 stars
This unassuming little shop and deli is a wonderful respite for lunch if you work nearby.

Canal
Gen Y gets to see and be seen at sizzling new Canal. Stylish human scenery is a critical part of the Canal equation

Cantina Laredo
Cantina Laredo, Arizona's sole entry from a Texas-based restaurant conglomeration, offers a killer happy hour, a stylish hacienda atmosphere, and filling, if not inspired, gourmet Mexican cuisine.

Capistrano's Italian Delicatessen

Carefree Station Grill & Bar
There are two difficult decisions to make when dining at Carefree Station Grill & Bar.

Carlsbad Tavern, 3 stars
This friendly watering hole is a neighborhood favorite for happy hour and late night snacks.

Carlsbad Tavern, 4 stars
Carlsbad Tavern serves up quirky ambience and excellent food featuring green and red chili sauces that are the staple of New Mexico's cuisine.

Carly's Bistro
Carly's Bistro in downtown Phoenix raises the bar for late night dining. Deliciously different appetizers set the pace for a meal accompanied by live music almost every night of the week.

Carmella's Italian Kitchen and Bar, 2 stars
Carmella's often misses the mark, but delivers with attentive service and delicious pizzas.

Carmen's Bistro
The name sound's Italian, the food looks Italian, but it's more like a karaoke lounge/pool hall. Carmen's Bistro is a place for upper-middle age Sinatra fans to go for beer, billiards and karaoke. The dining wasn't an attraction, although the eggplant parmesan was pretty darn good for karaoke pool hall food.

Carmine's Little Italy, 3 stars
If you live/work/play in downtown Phoenix, Carmine's Little Italy serves up some pretty tasty pizza at particularly palatable prices.

Cartwright's
A classy twist on Arizona ranch cooking with all-natural boutique-farmed meats including elk, buffalo and white Pekin duck.

Caruso's Italian Ristorante
Caruso's is a good Italian restaurant in Gilbert, and has the potential to be a great Italian restaurant. The strip mall on the southwest corner of Greenfield and Baseline is probably not the best location for Caruso's, but once you find it you will probably want to make a return trip. I know I will.

Casa Filipina Bakeshop and Restaurant, 3.5 stars
Casa Filipina is a clean, pleasant bakery-cum-restaurant featuring Filipino classics.

Casa Mia
The food at Casa Mia is very good. The service at Casa Mia is outstanding. This cozy family-owned trattoria in northeast Scottsdale has a loyal following, and it's easy to understand why.

Catia's Kitchen
Catia's Kitchen, near 32nd Street and Shea, is a charming little restaurant run by chef-owners Esther and Bill Case, both graduates of the Scottsdale Culinary Institute.

Celtic Curtain
There's more to the Celtic Curtain than the simple sports bar its decor suggests. It's more importantly an honest, Irish restaurant, with well-crafted, from-scratch staples like shepherd's pie, fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage and divine shamrock-shaped doughnuts.

Center Bistro
Organic food has long been a mainstay in California and other parts of the world, but for some reason, it's still somewhat of a novelty in the Valley. It's starting to evolve, though, as high-end restaurants here offer seasonal, organic menus and locally sourced ingredients.

Centro Paninoteca
The full menu of panini, salads and appetizers is served until 2 a.m., every day except Sunday. But anytime is perfect to fill up on delicious Italian-bent plates prepared with high-end ingredients, alongside boutique beers and wine, or a cocktail from the full bar.

Cerveza

CeZar's Restaurante, 3 stars
The food isn't bad, but nothing is really outstanding on the short, mainstream menu.

Champagne and seafood: a luxury pairing for NYE
Champagne - the sparkling wine uncorked for New Year's - is too often pigeonholed as a celebratory drink for toasts and overlooked as a light, crisp companion for food. Although its range of styles makes Champagne a versatile match for a variety of foods, it pairs effortlessly with seafood.

This quality, in turn, is why seafood continues gaining momentum as a top choice for New Year's Eve dining.

Chanpen Thai Cuisine
Thai food, say, 20 years ago was exotic and thrilling. It was not easy to find in most places east of LA and it was definitely a treat wherever you got it.

Chef H Restaurant & Grill, 3 stars
Cheery Chef H himself greets and serves diners, asking time and again, "How is everything?"

Cheuvront Wine & Cheese Bar, 3.5 stars
Cheuvront skillfully blends a menu of artisanal cheeses, select wines and distinctive food.

Chicago Hamburger Co.
For many people, sports and Chicago are synonymous.

China Chili

China King
You'll find Chinatown-quality, Hong Kong-style dim sum at China King in Chandler.

China Palace

Chives
Chives is a lunch spot in northeast Mesa at Stonebridge Manor, a large mansion that has served for many years as a prime location for weddings, banquets, and other elegant celebrations. The new eatery offers flavorful sandwiches, salads and pizzas in an outdoor patio area, or it's the perfect place to pick up a picnic lunch.

Chloe's Corner
A quick-service diner and grab-n-go market with a short menu of grilled cheese, deli sandwiches, salads, and breakfast plates.

Chodang Tofu & BBQ
It may be part of a Southern California chain, with some 15 branches scattered across America, but Chodang doesn't feel like a cookie-cutter operation. It certainly doesn't look like one, with its handsome hardwood floors, decorative kim chee urns, peaceful paintings of homeland scenes and paper place mats extolling the virtues of tofu.

And it certainly doesn't taste like one. Such invigorating fare couldn't possibly come out of a corporate recipe manual.

Chompie's
After 30 years, still a top-notch traditional New York deli and maker of the Valley's best bagels. Customers pack in for the "mile high" sandwiches on fresh-baked bread, braised brisket, and classic chicken in the pot.

Chop and Wok / Wok Star
It's take-out Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hawaiian and California-inspired dishes on one side of the tiny shop, and a coffee house, smoothie shack and full bar on the other. All together, it's one of the Valley's best spots for wor wonton, chicken lettuce wraps and creative cocktails.

Christo's
When temperatures take a dip and clouds roll in, my appetite thermostat automatically ratchets up a notch.

Christopher's Restaurant & Crush Lounge
In his new digs, Christopher Gross is dishing out reenergized French bistro fare.

Churchill's Pub & Grill
Churchill's Pub & Grill in Chandler will make you rethink any ideas about "British cuisine" being an oxymoron. Representative dishes such as bangers n' mash, beef and British ale pie and bread n' butter pudding are well-executed and enjoyable.

Cicio's Italian Restaurant
Cicio's has been serving huge portions to its loyal fans for 12 years.

Circa 1900
At last, a reason to come downtown that doesn't involve seeing a game, concert or play. It's dinner at delightful new Circa 1900.

CK's Tavern & Grill
CK's offer a menu that goes beyond the usual burger-and-a-beer grub. While nothing is particularly wild, the menu runs the gamut (including chicken, ribs, fish, steak, pasta and Mexican) and food doesn't taste like it was thrown from the freezer to the deep fryer.

Cocono's Mexican Island Kitchen
Moises Treves of Such Is Life is back with Cocono's. Trying to please both foodies and gringos, he's filling a gap that doesn't need filling.

CoffeeBuzz
Since opening in Ahwatukee Foothills in 2005, the CoffeeBuzz has established itself as one of those "third places" besides work and home where people go to feel welcome. Mouth-watering grilled sandwiches with top-quality ingredients make it more than just a hangout, though.

Corbin's Bar & Grill
I'm tempted to move to north central Phoenix, just so that I can claim Corbin's Bar & Grill as my neighborhood hangout.

Corbin's Bar & Grill, 3 stars
Corbin's new incarnation remains a pricey bar and grill - emphasis on the bar.

Cork, 4.5 stars
A 6-month-old stunner that finally puts the East Valley on the destination-restaurant map.

Corleone's
"Pat's or Geno's?" If you understand the question, then you must be from Philly. It refers to cheesesteak sandwiches. In Philadelphia, the loyalties are fierce and the debates can be heated when it comes to cheesesteak. The right meat, cooked just the right way, must be served on the right roll. Here in the Valley, Phoenicians and Philadelphians alike can enjoy a "whiz wit" from Corleone's while debating more important topics like Filiberto's versus Roliberto's. The cheesesteak is cherished comfort food for Philadelphians, along with Tastykakes and Wise potato chips, all of which are served at Corleone's.

Cornish Pasty Co.
The Cornish Pasty Co. in Tempe is dark. And that's a good thing.

Country Cottage Café & Gift Shop

Cowboy Cafe
An authentic Western diner where locals and cowboys meet to chow down on chicken fried steak, chuck wagon breakfasts, sandwiches and pie.

Cracked Crab
The tourists that visit Cave Creek are left to fend for themselves in a land of bad restaurants.

Crackers & Co. Café
Sometimes a salad is just a salad. But, dear Freud, it can be so much more.

Crazy Jim's

Crazy Jim's Restaurant, 3 stars
Known for its Greek food, Crazy Jim's also comes through with classic Italian dishes.

Crepes and Bakes
Crepes and Bakes, a sunny little spot in the Scottsdale Seville shopping center, is tiny and charming.

Cucina Tagliani

Curry House Flavor of India
Despite the proliferation of ethnic cuisines in Chandler, ranging from Ethiopian to Thai, French to Filipino, I only knew of one Indian place. And I wasn't thrilled with it.

Curry Leaf Indian Grill, 2 stars
This Indian Grill offers made-from-scratch Indian food - flavorful but low fat, fast but healthy.

D'Arcy McGee's, 4 stars
An expansive menu offers lots of variety, some of it Irish, and some basic American pub grub.

D'Vine Wine Bar & Bistro
D'Vine Wine Bar & Bistro is a full-fledged restaurant with extensive by-the-glass lists and bottles for drinking on site and buying to go. The menu is generous, ranging from tapas plates to sandwiches to full entrees.

Da Vang Restaurant, 4 stars
The delicious, authentic Vietnamese is enough to forgive the less-than-stellar service.

Daily Dose, 4 stars
Almost every item on the menu is priced from $6.95 to $9.95, from eggs Benedict to burgers.

Daphne's Greek Café
In true Greek mythological tradition, the young staff at Daphne's Greek Café seems to operate on winged feet.

Don Lencho's
Everyone needs a good neighborhood Mexican restaurant. For those living near Old Town Peoria, Don Lencho's is a great choice. It's a small, friendly spot that serves all the old Mexican favorites you crave along with an extensive seafood selection.

Dooby's Grill Café
Dooby's Grill Café is Middle Eastern food the way it should be - aromatic, complex, but easily accessible and affordable. And the service is so friendly, you might think you stumbled into a long-lost relative's dining room.

DownUnder Wines
Australian-Asian fusion food? It makes perfect sense when you think about it. But if you're still not convinced, DownUnder Wines in Chandler provides a chance to affordably test the waters.

Dozo
When a new restaurant pops up in my 'hood, I tend to take notice. When said restaurant used to be a drive-through Chinese place, and now sports a "sushi" sign out front, I tend to get scared.

Dragonfly Cafe

Dragonfly Vietnamese Kitchen
You can get a good idea of the firepower in the Vietnamese culinary arsenal at new Dragonfly in Mesa.

Drift Polynesian Restaurant & Lounge
The theme is Polynesian tiki lounge, but the cuisine is a mix of classy poolside resort staples and upscale Pacific Rim. Focus on the outstanding daily specials like pan-seared ahi with furikake-seasoned sticky rice and PEI mussels in coconut-ginger broth.

Drip Coffee Lounge
Drop by Drip and have a little taste of some new, neighborhood goodness.

Eddie Chan's Asian Bistro
The restaurant is not a chain and no chain-y vibe. Just a mildly lit, spacious room with deep red décor throughout, and a very friendly host.

Eddie V's happy hour, 4 stars
Eddie's lounge menu features more than 20 appetizers, soups and salads ranging from $6.95 to $14.95. During happy hour, eight of those selections sell for half price.

Eddie's House, 3 stars
Eddie Matney is back - the same, alas, as ever with a familiar and uncreative menu.

Eden's Grill
I have a friend who is a vegetarian. She brings her own seaweed and soy milk on ski trips and believes kombucha tea is a refreshing soft drink. She's a good sport, though, and has been known to cheerfully fry up bacon for her loved ones. Who better, I thought, to accompany me to Eden's Grill, a Northeast Phoenix restaurant with an extensive vegetarian menu.

Efes Turkish Cuisine, 3.5 stars
When you're in the mood for a good baba ghanoush, take a trip to Turkey at Efes in Tempe.

Eggroll Lumpia Factory/ Island Roots
Not too long ago, the Asian food vocabulary in this town was pretty much exhausted after ''kung pao chicken,'' ''moo shu pork'' and ''chop suey.'' Don't believe me? I have a 1978 Valley restaurant guide that offered readers an explanation of ''sushi.''

El Bravo
A cheery, casual Mexican café specializing in burros, tamales, tacos and Indian fried bread, served dine-in or to go.

El Conquistador
Too many Mexican restaurants in the Valley don't seem to take much pride in their cuisine. Too much cheese and an abundance of runny sauces are what pass for flavor.

Erawan Restaurant
I have a 15-year-old car that will not die. It's faded and out-of-style, but I keep driving it because it's reliable and does the job. Erawan Restaurant in Glendale has been around about as long and inspires similar feelings.

Grazie means "Thank you" in Italian, and residents of Verrado and the Buckeye area should be grateful for this pleasant wine bar and café and the yummy pizza it serves.<

Greasewood Flat, 3 stars
Burgers, beer, live music and dancing outdoors - it's old Arizona in all its glory.

Green
Green bills itself as "new American vegetarian," but really it's an all-vegan restaurant - no meat, no dairy, no eggs, no honey. For non-vegans, this might sound like no fun. But instead of asking, "Where's the beef?," your taste buds will have a little party.

Green, Pita Jungle, Ausler's Grill
Want to get a little fresh? Try one of these restaurants offering vegetarian dishes.

Grilled Expedition
Grilled Expedition is one of those restaurants where you must know your mission ahead of time. My advice: Definitely go, but stick with the impressive starters. Entrees are underwhelming.

This Gilbert location was Wang's, then Weng's and, under the best signage so far, it's Jasmine Café, another addition to the Valley's enticing Thai menu.

Jason's Deli
I've got to find the Jason behind Jason's Deli. With this kind of food and dessert, it might just be true love.

Jaspers Peak Bistro Bar & Grille
Nobody has ever confused our cactus-studded Valley with the Louisiana bayou. And given this town's indifferent Cajun/Creole restaurant scene - Justin's Ragin' Cajun is still greatly missed - nobody ever will.

Kabab Palace

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, 3 stars
If you want sushi with a side of fun, Kabuki is stylishly satisfying with an extensive menu.

Kabuki Sushi & Grill
Kabuki Sushi & Grill has the sleek, modern décor that is popular with trendy sushi bars, but an accessible menu and relaxed atmosphere gives it a friendly, neighborhood restaurant feel. Kai
Stunning Kai, at the Sheraton on the Gila River Reservation, delivers the complete fine-dining package, along with a palpable sense of time and place.

Kasha's Bakery and BBQ
Kasha's is a family-friendly, wallet-friendly spot that could become a favorite in the Elliot Road shopping corridor anchored by Wal-Mart and Costco. The bright, spacious interior with light wood décor remains the same as the former tenant, Atlanta Bread Company, and the menu still covers many of the basics: soups, salads, sandwiches. But the new owner added broasted chicken and barbecue to the mix.

The next time you wake up on a cozy weekend craving a good breakfast, try Kashman's Deli, an informal breakfast and lunch place offering a warm and relaxed environment to perk up and get the weekend off to a good start.

From pumpkin spice bread pudding to strawberry scones, you could get a toothache just looking at all the goodies.

Ko'Sin Restaurant

Kobe Teppan & Sushi
It's easy to do at Tempe's interactive dining option, Kobe Teppan & Sushi, a gathering spot that provides a little drama and a lot of fun for the cost of a meal.

Koi
Three-month-old Koi in Glendale has developed the convivial feel of a neighborhood frat house, complete with loud, piped-in contemporary music. On one visit, I watched some very cheerful diners treat the sushi chefs to sake bombers, which they all slammed back together. The place has a solid following, and already a second branch is scheduled for Arrowhead. The customers are coming for the camaraderie and affordable sushi deals - $8.95 for any two of the 53 non-specialty rolls. But, with a few exceptions, the Japanese fare generally isn't as impressive as the atmosphere and prices. (Koi offers several Korean dishes as well.)

Kona Grill
The sushi bar is great. But Kona Grill's dinner menu is just as enticing, whether spicing its American cuisine with island flavors or offering Asian dishes like Thai peanut chicken noodles or a spicier than average pad Thai in a black-bean chili sauce, one of 45 sauces Kona makes from scratch each day. Their signature dish is a macadamia nut chicken served with cheddar-mashed potatoes.

Kyoto
At Kyoto in Old Scottsdale, these guys know a thing or two about showmanship. Kyoto has been around for 20 years, and business hasn't slowed.
